Four weeks ago, 7 juniors from Atlanta traveled up to DC to participate in the Mid-Atlantic Regional Junior Championships. I competed in the GU15 draw, with my friends Keela Boyce and Ami Niksich competing in the GU13 draw, Alex Rankin in BU17, Tommy Rankin in BU19, and Ashwin Mudaliar and Devin Neveu in BU13. We had some great results, with all of us placing within the top 8. Aside from playing plenty of squash, we also explored DC and had a lot of fun.
On Friday, my mom and I walked around a quite chilly DC and visited the National Air and Space Museum. There were so many things to look at! We had the whole day to sightsee on Friday, as matches did not begin until Saturday.
On Saturday, the tournament started up with lots of energy in the air. Tommy breezed past his two opponents, as did Ashwin and Devin. Alex won one match and lost in a close fifth
(16-14). Ami and Keela both placed 2nd in their pools; Keela losing to the eventual winner of her draw. Although I unfortunately lost all my games (except one!), getting 8th, it was a great learning experience. As Saturday wrapped up, Keela, Ami, and I had dinner and ice cream together.
On Sunday, Keela edged out Ami in a 4-game final, placing 3rd and 4th respectively. Ashwin and Devin finished up their draw with a close match between them, ultimately getting 1st and 2nd respectively. Alex and Tommy both lost their last matches, with Alex placing 7th and Tommy placing 2nd in their respective division. Overall, all of us had lots of fun in DC and played some excellent squash. The success that we showed in the Mid-Atlantic Regionals really says a lot about the future of junior squash in Atlanta and the southeastern region.
